The depression we share.

Such an enlightening video, so many feelings come to mind watching the video about my own personal experience with depression. I have honestly been looking for a video for so long to express my feelings on depression, but this video is as close as I can find thus far. Especially how many of us try to block out or suppress the feelings of worthlessness, rather we need to feel it and express our feelings. It’s so true when he says depression is a family secret that people have, since i’ve started writing about my depression and sharing it with friends. People do treat me differently, but in a way where they want to share with me their own experiences with mental health.

One quote that stuck out for me in the talk: “The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from me in that moment.” – Andrew Solomon

Thus his talk was equal parts eloquent and devastating, Andrew Solomon (a writer and philosopher) was able to allow the viewer to go into the darkest corners of his mind during the years he battled depression. Through his experience of loss led him to an eye-opening journey across the world to interview others with depression. However, through his travels he discovered that, to his surprise, the more he talked, the more people wanted to tell their own stories.

My question of pondering: What causes some people to be more resilient or allow them to survive?

Link: As the video points out, acceptance is the key to living.

Thank you Andrew Solomon for your enlightening talk.

Feel free to share your experiences here.
